This course introduces students to the major works, forms, and themes of the Chinese literary tradition, focusing on the premodern period (antiquity–1800). Primary readings will consist of eight great books from this tradition that cover a range of genres—poems, novels, parables, scriptures, and philosophical writings. These will be accompanied by lecture videos, writing assignments, and other exercises designed to help students immerse themselves in unfamiliar ways of writing about the world. Worth 5 units, this course fulfills GE requirements for Area G. Scholarships available for incoming Freshmen.
