Summer Film Screening of "Whale Rider" with Panel Discussion

Event Description:

UCSB is offering a public film screening of Niki Caro’s award-winning film “Whale Rider” as a highlight of community-oriented summer 2023 programming around Local and Global Indigenous Childhoods. The screening is followed by a discussion with the author, Witi Ihimaera, and will be moderated by Prof. Nicola Daly, an expert on bilingual writing for children. Both Ihimaera and Daly will be flying in from New Zealand. 

Film Description:

After the upcoming chief of a Maori tribe in New Zealand dies at birth, the long-standing custom of men being selected as chief is upset. However, his twin sister, Pai survives, and sets out to win over her ultra-traditional grandfather and claim her birthright.
