The UCSB Research Mentorship Program is the ideal learning opportunity for the selected students because each chooses a research discipline and is partnered with a UCSB researcher who is a leader in their field. This six-week program accepts high-achieving high school students from all over the world and offers them a variety of interdisciplinary projects to chose from. Then, each carefully selected mentor guides the student interns through the academic research process and as a result prepares them to communicate intelligently about their discipline. In addition to gaining a deep relationship with their mentor and the academic benefits, the student interns will be submersed into University life and be networked with equally ambitious and curious peers.

As the UCSB Research Mentorship Program Director, I create an inspiring environment that runs efficiently. I relate to the participants in this program because I traveled to the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor for an eight-week summer program. As an intern there, my mind was opened to new ideas and my academic goals became clear. After earning a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering here at UCSB, I mentored an undergraduate student in a year long research project. This was a mutually inspiring collaboration. My intern is now a graduate student at Georgia Tech. and now I have a career in outreach. In 2010 and 2012, I was the Program Coordinator for the Summer Applied Biotechnology Research Experience (SABRE) at UCSB, which is a science and engineering internship program for undergraduate students.

The team I lead at the UCSB Research Mentorship Program, comprised of students, researchers, staff, sponsors and families, is deeply invested in the success of the interns. Success is measured by the intern reflecting and communicating the many ways he or she matured over the span of the program. This maturity and the relationships that developed will strengthen their foundation which will springboard future successes.
